Movement Hub is a centralized platform created to amplify the on-the-ground activism and organizing within Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities across the country. We offer resources for and by AAPI community organizations to promote cross racial unity and civic participation for realizing systemic and structural change. This hub was built by the UCLA Center for Neighborhood Knowledge in collaboration with the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund, our technical partners Social Ink for website development, and Manon Vergerio and Madeline Blout for mapping, and artwork by Natalie Bui, amongst other artists.
The Center for Neighborhood Knowledge (formerly the Center for the Study of Inequality) conducts basic and applied research on the socioeconomic formation and internal dynamics of neighborhoods. We work with a broad set of data and employ a range of analytical skills to examine neighborhood phenomena across time and space. Many of our reports and findings are available on the publications section of the CNK website and it is our hope that they might act as tools for community members, leaders, and organizations to inform and empower. As a land grant institution, the Center for Neighborhood Knowledge acknowledges the Gabrielino and Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (Los Angeles basin, Southern Channel Islands), and that their displacement has enabled the flourishing of UCLA.
The AAPI Civic Engagement Fund understands there is a longstanding need for AAPIs – as a community of color and predominantly immigrant and refugee population – to become informed, activated, and engaged, particularly in the area of civic participation. Yet, AAPI voter registration and turnout rates have historically been disproportionately low. The Fund fosters a culture of civic participation within AAPI communities by supporting the growth of AAPI groups as organizational movement and power building leaders that achieve specific policy, systems, and transformational change. The AAPI Civic Engagement Fund supports The Shared Liberation Network organizations below to advance racial equity and intersectional justice. The Network is made up of 37 Asian American and Pacific Islander social justice organizations across 20 states who are responding to increasing anti-racism violence faced by their community members in the face of a global pandemic and uprisings calling for an end to systemic racism. The groups within the Shared Liberation Network are coming together to build community power, share strategies and resources, and explore how to work together towards a more inclusive, just, equitable, and safe world.
